Many Americans Believe That They Should Not Have Any Consequences For A Strategic Default

Do Americans think that strategic default remains a acceptable alternative to distressed homeownership situation? It seems so. According to a recent  poll of 1,026 adults conducted by JZ Analytics on behalf of ID Analytics, 32 percent stated that they believe homeowners should be able to strategically default with any consequences.

The survey also reported that 13 percent of the people surveyed said that they will likely strategically default on their own mortgage, and 17 percent said that they know someone who has strategically defaulted.

In a related topic, Americans seems to have a similar view of low credit scores and obtaining credit. According to the same survey, 36 percent of Americans believe that it is socially acceptable to have a low credit score,  and in addition, 17 percent said that they would exaggerate personal information to obtain credit.

Eye For An Eye Mentality

Some of these numbers appear to be a shift in economic and moral philosophy from several years ago. When people took advantage of the Ninja loans (No Income, No Job, No Assets) or gladly accepted a loan where the homeowner execrated the stated income did people see that those actions as a one time error in judgment or an action that they thought they could get away with?

Do we get the distinct impression that this poll states that about one third of Americans think that they can lie or that because the banks lied, cheated and stole that they can do the same? Is this eye for an eye mentality?  Or do people simply think that they can pull one over on the banks and the rest of society?

Is this where our country is headed?
