Treasury Expects Return of $15.1B from AIG Stock Sale

Unless you were buried in a cave during the financial meltdown, most will remember the 2008 Wall Street meltdown which filmmaker Charles Ferguson dutifully documented in his film Inside Job. As part of the “too big to fail” philosophy, a huge portion of the meltdown and subsequent government bailout involved the Treasury Department bailing out American International Group (AIG) to the tune of $182 billion.

This week, the Treasury estimated a return of $12.4 billion after selling about $18 billion in shares and it expects to see an additional $2.7 billion after underwriters exercised their option to purchase more shares.

Taxpayers To Get Their AIG Bailout Money Fully Refunded

This final amount offers important significance because it means that taxpayer who funded the overall $182 billion commitment to AIG will fully recover their funds.

Although this payback means that taxpayers will get the money returned to them, it will also mean that we will also see both political parties, the Treasury, Federal Reserve and any other government agency that sees fit to take a lot of credit for preventing Depression II and keeping the country afloat.
