First Case Of West Nile Virus in Solano County This Year

In the past few years, the foreclosures crisis has caused housing prices to decrease, neighborhood blight, and cases of mental depression. Now, we get word from Solano County officials who report that neglected swimming pools of the many foreclosed homes could become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and contribute to the spread of West Nile  in the county and across the state.

Recently, a 50-year-old man contracted the first human case of West Nile virus in Solano County. This case marks the first case in the county since 2008. So far this year, 75 human cases of West Nile in 17 California counties have been reported, up from 33 at the same time last year.

This incident also marks the first human case of West Nile in the nine Bay Area counties this year, according to the most recent data on the state’s West Nile tracking site.
