Richard Gere Completely Plays Bernie Madoff Character

If one trend in Hollywood exists it might be the Hollywood view of Wall Street, the 1%, the banks and the like. In the past year or so we have seen the likes of great financial collapse documentaries (e.g. Inside Job) or dramatic films (Boiler Room, Wall Street 2) and now Arbitrage.

Arbitrage, which means the simultaneous buying and selling of securities, currency, or commodities in different markets or in derivative forms in order to take advantage of differing prices for the same asset, not only offers a chance to see Richard Gere give what be his best performance as Robert Miller (a Bernie Madoff character) but also how Hollywood and in particular for first time director Nicholas Jarecki creates a realistic thriller wrapped around high finance, love and trust.

Jarecki Creates Top Notch Financial Thriller

Just as he attempts to complete the sale of the his struggling fincial company, Miller gets caught up in a series of unfortunate incidents ranging from minor to serious, that could jeopardize the deal. For Miller, his life remains all about “the deal”. Loyalty, relationships, friendships and the like can be bought, sold or tossed away with a bagful of cash or a trust fund. Is this film a reflection on how people on Wall Street, corporate American, the banks?

Jarecki creates a taught thriller where the screws not only tighten on Miller but the audience. Maybe films like Arbitrage will bring not only more intelligent thrillers to the screen but more awareness as to what money can and cannot accomplish.
