Underwater (As In Upside Down Mortgage) Becomes An Official Dictionary Word

Since the housing meltdown several words and terms have become more commonplace in the real estate lexicon. Unfortunately, terms such as “underwater” and “upside-down” have taken on new meanings. Soon, dictionary readers will soon learn that underwater will mean more than just getting wet.

Merriam-Webster released its list of new words to be added to the 2012 update of its collegiate dictionary, revealing that “underwater” will now be an official term used to describe a mortgage debt higher than the worth of house for which it was secured.

Systemic Risk Also Added To Dictionary

The updated list also includes “systemic risk”, with the definition being, “the risk that the failure of one financial institution (as a bank) could cause other interconnected institutions to fail and harm the economy as a whole.” Those who would like a more visual understanding should watch the fascinating documentary film Inside Job.

Other colorful terms to be added to the update include: “man cave”, “earworm” and “bucket list”.
