While the banks continue to toot their own horns about how mortgage applications continue to rise, we found this story by Fortune magazine writer Nin-Hai Tseng interesting because of the way the actual numbers stack up. It turns out that the mortgage application numbers may need to be looked at more closely.

Even though 30 year mortgage interest rates hover around 4 percent, many of the loan applications continue to just be applications but they do not turn into actual loans. Many of these potential loan applicants buyers continue to get beaten out in offers by all cash investors.
