Wages and the Cost of Housing in America

The Center for Housing Policy, the research affiliate of the National Housing Conference, just released an update of its Paycheck to Paycheck database comparing wages for workers in 74 different occupations against housing costs in more than 200 U.S. metro areas.

Guess what city ranks highest? If you didn’t read our blog title you might guess New York or Honolulu. Incorrect. Our own San Francisco maintains its #1 ranking –

1Q2012 Price – $549,000
1Q2011 Price – $550,000

Surprisingly, San Jose jumped to #2 due in part to the Silicon Valley upswing of prices –

1Q2012 Price – $420,000
1Q2011 Price – $425,000
