Bay Area foreclosures rise in recent months

Think that foreclosures have increased the past few months? Most people would guess that the foreclosure numbers slid down but from April to May foreclosures actually increased slightly across the Bay Area. The other half of the numbers show that foreclosure numbers shot down from a year ago as banks continue to seek (or are being forced) to seek foreclosure alternatives.

Instead of foreclosing on homes, lenders have been using short sales and various government programs (HARP 2.0) in an effort to lose less money and maintain a positive PR image.

Most of the so called experts expect to see foreclosure to remain “flat” for a while.

In looking at the various counties it turns out that fewer homes entered the foreclosure process in Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties, while actual foreclosures increased slightly from April in Alameda, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties. These numbers rate a 40 to 50 percent turndown or more from a year ago in those counties.
